Circa 1926, we are talking about Shyama, who was just 14 years old when she got married to Bachchan, who was barely 19. We will share the story about their love and life journey, and how Bachchan ji found her to be a free-spirited, always joyful, cheerful girl, like Shelley’s Skylark – “an unbodied joy whose race is just begun”. उसके उस सरलपने से मैंने था हृदय सजाया, नित नए मधुर गीतों से उसका उर था उकसाया। She was smiling even in her death, something that is expressed in this line – मृत्यु शय्या पर पड़े अति - रुग्ण की अन्तिम हँसी-सी - यत्न करके खिल रही है - एक लघु कलिका निराली। She was also the first one who could see a great poet in Bachchan and did everything in her powers to keep his poetry going. It was during her lifetime that “Madhushala” was written and published. She made a huge impact even in her short life. जब तुझे पहचान पाया, देवता को जान पाया,  खींच तुझको ले गया तब काल का आह्वान! यह तेरा करुण अवसान। Bachchan used to call her “Joy” and she called him “Suffering” – why? Let’s find out! :-) Welcome to the 15th episode of stories from Madhushala (मधुशाला), Harivansh Rai Bachchan's epic poetry, written in 1935 and part of the trilogy of Madhubala and Madhukalash. This is a podcast of Hindi Poems and Poets. I host one more podcast on Hindi poetry of Hope, Life and Optimism - Please check out here Do write a review and send your comments.
