59 Chinese Apps banned in India

Amid tense stand-off in Ladakh between India and China, the Indian government banned 59 Chinese Apps, stating a threat to national security and sovereignty as the reason. The Press release by the Ministry of Information Technology reads that “invoking its power under section 69A of the Information Technology Act read with the relevant provisions of the Information Technology (Procedure and Safeguards for Blocking of Access of Information by Public) Rules 2009 and in view of the emergent nature of threats has decided to block 59 apps (see Appendix) since in view of the information available they are engaged in activities which are prejudicial to sovereignty and integrity of India, defense of India, the security of the state, and public order.” In the wake of the tension in Ladakh, boycotting Chinese apps is seen as a strong step. This move hits the interest of Chinese businesses in India.
